This walk is a favorite for pedestrians who want to appreciate the city’s architecture from a distance, while getting scenic views of the famous Brisbane River. The walk is located en route Brisbane CBD from the iconic New Farm, so most visitors from the latter will often take on the walk to somewhat complete visiting both iconic attractions.
It is interesting to note that the walk has a tumultuous past, having replaced what was to be the city’s very first floating walkway. This grandiose project came to a sudden halt after Brisbane River burst its banks in one of the country’s worst floods back in 2011. The good news is that the river walk is today one of Brisbane’s stellar attractions. It is also an extremely easy and fast easy to get to the New Farm as it eliminates the need to get across rolling hills.
The structure of the New Farm River Walk is such that there are designated areas for cyclists and pedestrians. This ensures that you walk or peddle at your own pace without bumping shoulders into others. Cyclist paths span 3.5 meters while walkways span 2.5 meters – both provide ample space for use.
What’s more, the walk also has shaded spots where users can take a breather and simply soak in the beauty of the majestic river as it flows, cutting across the concrete jungle that Brisbane is. In sharp contrast with the old Riverwalk that had visitors walk away from the river bank to exciting positions on the river, the new river walk follows the river’s path. This design offers great views of the glistening waters and the skyscrapers in the city’s capital.
The entry to the river walk from the New Farm is found at the Riverview Court, which is found at the end of Merthyr road. The river walk comes to an end at the iconic Howard Smoth Wharves from where it links to the riverside boardwalk towards the city centre.
Make sure to carry your camera with you for amazing photograph sessions along the river walk. If you are lucky to take a walk at sunrise as the sun’s first rays touch the earth, or at sunset, you sould be able to get stunning shots that will be a beautiful reminder of your time in Brisbane.
As one of the most famous attractions in Brisbane, the river walk offers an exciting way to go sightseeing. Since the shaded spots are scattered along the walk, you may want to take a leisure walk at dawn or at dusk, when the temperatures are more forgiving (particularly during summer). The added bonus is that these times offer some of the most stunning views along the famous Brisbane River.
