St John’s Anglican Cathedral

January 4, 2016 by David

The church is a spectacular structure that blends Gothic aura with materials including stone, stained glass and timber carved in eclectic styles. One of the most fascinating aspects about this church is that it is one of the last churches to be constructed in the gothic style.

The period of construction of the cathedral also marvels many visitors. Building started in earnest in the early 20th century, from 1906 to 2009, spanning more than a century. This lengthy period of construction has allowed the cathedral to fuse modern style with age old gothic style.

On arrival at the cathedral, you will be welcomed by a glorious interior: tastefully designed sandstone columns, vaulted ceilings and swanky arches. With seating space for 1000 guests, there is ample space for visitors to enjoy the creative works of art. Look out for the intricate carvings made of wood at the stalls where the choir sits, as well as the Archbishop’s seat. You cannot possibly miss the close to 500 cushions that dot the church’s interior.

The cushions are designed locally by students from the Queensland College of Arts. It is fascinating to enjoy the creativity of the flora and fauna that depicts Australia’s beautiful and diverse landscape on the cushions. The windows compliment the overall style of St John’s Anglican Cathedral, and provoke you to think critically about what really matters.

With all these features, it is little wonder that the cathedral is a popular landmark. Diverse people gather at the church for worship, encouraging diversity, inclusion and companionship within the religious location. For this reason, the cathedral hosts different events that include weddings and baptisms.

The music tradition at the cathedral also welcomes music lovers from across Australia. Music events are a regular part of the cathedral’s calendar of events. Check out the cathedral’s official website for additional details on the different events, particularly during the holiday season.

One of the facilities that captivate visitors at the cathedral is the Book Centre. The facility is open on Sundays, and this permits visitors to borrow spiritual books that help them grow in their faith. At the St. John’s Centre for God-Talk, visitors can learn more about who God is and unraveling the mystery of faith in God.
