City Botanic Gardens

November 5, 2015 by David

City Botanic Gardens is one of Brisbane’s most popular travel destinations, and for good reason. This expansive green space stretches along the river.

The gardens can best be summed up as constituting well-manicured verdant lawns, picnic sites and diverse flora that thrives in Brisbane’s climatic setting. There are several attractions on location, all against the background of the flowing Brisbane River.

One of the most popular attractions at the garden is the Jemmy Morrill and the Brolgas Sculpture. This sculpture points to a rich history in Australia’s past. This is because Morrill was the only person to have survived a tragic shipwreck that occurred in the Great Barrier Reef in the late 19th century. Needless to say, his rescue forged excellent relationships between locals in Brisbane and the Aboriginal people, and it was only proper for him to be honored this way.

The Weeping Fig Avenue was set up in the late 19th century, and today acts as the boundary between the gardens and the neighboring Queen’s Park. The avenue makes for an excellent place for an evening walk as the sun sets to usher in Brisbane’s glowing skyline.

The Walter Hill Fountain is yet another attraction worth checking out at the City Botanic Gardens. Named in honor of the garden’s first caretaker, the fountain adds ornamental beauty to the gardens, creating a tranquil environment for nature lovers.

The Riverstage is a must-visit while at the Brisbane Botanic Gardens, especially when there are live events scheduled. The outdoor venue has hosted thousands of guests, so depending on the time of your visit; you can always check the events calendar at the gardens.

If you prefer the outdoors, the river frontage area is the place to be. With excellent walking and cycling trails, there is no better way to stay fit while enjoying the scenic outdoors? Take some time to enjoy the peace and quiet at the several ornamental ponds that dot the gardens. The kids will enjoy walking close to the ponds too.

Lastly, make time to visit the Bamboo Grove. This is a spectacular part of the garden that is home to more than 23 species of the bamboo tree. History shows that the idea of the Grove was birthed following the devastating loss of the bamboo collection. This loss was necessitated by incessant complaints of mosquitoes in the region as far back as 1937.

Some of the facilities on location at the City Botanic Gardens include the quaint City Gardens Café where you can enjoy light meals and finger-licking delights. The Gardens Cycle Hire Station located at the Albert Street entrance is perfect for outdoor lovers who would like to hire bicycles.
