Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium

November 13, 2015 by David

Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium sits at the entrance the renowned Botanic Gardens at Mt. Coot-tha, and is one of the most exciting tourist destinations.

Built in 1978, the planetarium was named after the then governor of New South Wales. This is the biggest planetarium in Australia. The facility boasts a number of telescopes as well as regular shows that attract tourists in their numbers.

The shows are held in the Cosmic Skydome. In this dome, the recreation of the universe comes alive, allowing you to indulge in an educative session. In addition to this, you can enjoy the display of space-related artifacts, with some exhibits obtained from fragmented asteroids! It is in this facility that you will also be able to see pictures from the famous Hubble Space Telescope.

If you prefer to catch all the action on screen, you will love the Mini Theatre. In here, there are features and documentaries about a wide range of astronomical topics, space projects and future plants for those in the astronomy field.

You can also make bookings for sessions at the Observatory. Typically, these sessions are used by astronomers at Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium for demonstration purposes (subject to weather and sky conditions). Note, however, that unlike other parts of the planetarium, the observatory is not accessible by wheelchair.

Head out to the Sundial Courtyard where you can simply relax and unwind on the benches as you soak in the tranquil surroundings. In this courtyard, a gigantic sundial made of concrete steel and glass sits, able to tell with almost-accurate estimates of when the sun is shining.

The Galaxy Gift shop is your go-to shop for all those nifty souvenirs that tell of your adventures at the Planetarium. Here, you can find spacecraft models, project tool kits, astronomy books star charts among many other items. Do not pass the opportunity to stroll through the display area.

This area takes you on an exciting astronomical adventure, complete with a real-life size copy of the lunar space Neil Armstrong wore on the widely acclaimed mission to the moon. Other items are on digital display for an exciting glimpse into the world of space.

There are regular shows that you can enjoy too, but it is important for you to note that the programs are not ideal for kids under the age of six. If travelling with family, allow the kids to enjoy the Children’s show. It is advisable to make advance bookings on the official website of Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium.
